4th Annual Smalljaw Elite Tourney Winners

Smalljaw Elite Tourney Winners

What a weekend! I can’t say enough about the smalljaw family! This was a fantastic time with some of the greatest people I have ever met. The food was unbelievable, and I already can’t wait for next year. If none of you have ever participated in this event, you really need to give it a shot! It is the best weekend of the entire year.
I would like to thank Thomas and Mitch at Horse Creek for putting up the money for this great event. I also would like to thank Steve Niemoeller, the owner of Steel Shad Lures (www.steelshad.com) for stepping up and giving us $100 for big green fish. Also, Jerry York (Pork) stepped up and added another $100 for big green fish. This gave us $100 each day for big fish. Thanks guys, without people like you, none of this would be possible.
The weather was textbook spring weather for smallmouth fishing on Saturday with 15 to 20 mph winds with gusts close to 25. It was crashing waves on the bank and creating mud lines that we all love to see in the spring. Because of all the rain that we have had the past few weeks, from the mid lake area up was stained to muddy. This brought on a fantastic crankbait bite for some as well as swimbaits. Points in the creeks seemed to be the key for most with a few fish coming from the flats. The water temps were in the 46 degree range on the lower end and 48 degree range mid lake. As you went back in the creeks mid lake and up, the water temps rose into the low 50’s. The wind laid down for the most part on Sunday with little cooler temps. The overcast skies made up for the lack of wind.
As most of you know, this is a big fish tourney with no fish under 16 inches allowed to be weighed. All fish must be over 21 inches to be weighed in.
On Saturday 4 smallmouth over 21 inches were brought to the scales with only one being less than 5 pounds. The big green fish for the day was a 5 pound hog caught by Bob Gatchall. Jerry York brought a 5.38 pound hog to the scales that ended up being the day one leader. Nick Haunert followed up with a fat 5.1 pounder, followed by a fantastic fish caught by Allen Kirkland that tipped the scales at 4.97 pounds. Adam Militana brought in a very nice 4.29 in caught on a crankbait. Jerry’s and Nick’s fish were both caught on the Big Hammer Swimbait (www.swimbait.com) and Allen’s fish was caught on the float n fly. This would be the only fish brought to the scales caught on the float n fly.
On Sunday things changed around a little. We had 2 more smallmouth over 21 inches brought to the scales. Matt Bevill brought in a very nice smallmouth that went 4.83 pounds. Then Jason Ramsey came in with a 5.46 pound hog that ended up putting him in first place!! Congrats to you Jason!! Both of these smallmouth were caught on the Big Hammer Swimbait. Joe Haunert brought in a 4 pound largemouth that took the big green fish pot for day 2.
Payout was as follows:
1st place - Jason Ramsey - $500.00
2nd place - Jerry York - $300.00
3rd place – Nick Haunert - $200.00
Day one big green fish – Bob Gatchall - $100.00 Day two big green fish – Joe Haunert - $100.00 I would like to thank Tom weaver (FESTER) for taking care of organizing the food for Friday night. He did a fantastic job, and we really appreciate all he did!
